Exploring 5 Of The Best Noise Cancelling Headphones For Lawn Mowing

Also known as active noise cancelling headphones, noise cancelling headphones have been around for a long time. Dr. Amar Bose came up with the idea of these headphones while on a plane.

As he was tried to listen to music, he realized it was challenging to have crisp, clear music the airplane engine roaring on in the background. This was in 1978.

Since then, the technology behind noise cancelling headphones for lawn mowing has improved with the modern headphones being able to drown out most of the annoying sounds coming from the lawnmower.

If you are into lawn mowing, you need to wear the best noise cancelling headphones for lawn mowing.

While there are many headphones in the market you can go for, only a few will provide you with the noise protection you deserve. Five of the best ones are:

These are the successors of the Bose QC 25 that my wife uses when flying.

I can clearly remember when I received these headphones. It was around 3 pm on Wednesday. When I held them, I jumped up and down like a little kid. This is because I had heard fantastic things about them.

At that time, I was using Sony 1000X, which had developed voice problems. They also weren’t cancelling as much noise as I wanted.

From the packaging to the presentation, everything screamed elegance.

How is the noise cancellation?

With Sony headphones, you can tell when noise cancellation is going on. This is due to the white noise effect. The Bose headphones, on the other hand, completely stop the noise.

There is neither white noise nor delay. When you put the headphones on, they completely block the noise from the lawnmower so you can concentrate on what is important—lawn mowing.

Unlike any other headphones I have ever used before, these headphones have levels of noise cancellation. Actually, there are three levels of noise cancellation that you can easily set from the Bose app.

What about sound quality?

I don’t like listening to music when mowing, but after all the hype about these headphones, I had to try on every whistle on them.

I find the sound quality in both Sony and Bose equally excellent, but I lean more on Sony. This is because the Sony app allows you to choose the sound level on an equalizer.

The Bose, on the other hand, hears the type of music you are playing and automatically optimizes the sound.

While some people might like this feature, I don’t. This is because I like having more control over what I’m listening to.

Despite this, the controls are intuitive and easy to find and use. To reduce the number of buttons on the headphones, Sony has one button doing multiple functions. For example, the on-off controls flip the headphones on and off.

You can also use the button to switch between devices. For example, you can use it to switch between your iPad, phone, and TV.

The right ear cup has three buttons that control the volume, skip, rewind, pause, answer/decline calls, and many others.

The left ear cup only has one button—the Google assistant button.

I noticed the song playback sounds better with the noise cancellation on high, and the bass sounds enhanced with noise cancellation on.

Are the headphones comfortable?

Yes, the headphones are incredibly comfortable. In fact, more comfortable than my Sony headphones. The ear cups are soft, and there isn’t a lot of clamping.

The top band has excellent padding, so even if you have a large head like mine, you don’t feel a lot of pressure.

The headphones weigh 8.3 ounces. While some of my friends say that the headphones are too heavy for long term use, I don’t find them heavy.

I’m on my lawn 3-4 hours every time, and I don’t remove them even once, and I don’t have head fatigue once I’m done.

How durable are the headphones?

Bose is a reputable brand and has made a name for itself for making top-notch products. It's over two years now I have been using these noise cancelling headphones for lawn mowing, and they still work as good as new.

The only thing I have done to them is to change the ear cushions after they wore out and started getting scratchy.

Pros

  • Elegant design
  • Premium noise cancellation
  • Very comfortable
  • Excellent sound quality
  • Long battery life

Cons

  • You can’t manually control the sound quality. Since the headphones automatically set the quality, it might not be ideal for your liking.
  • Some people have complained of the headphones creating cabin-like pressure that led to headaches
  • They are pricey hence not ideal for the budget shopper

Verdict

The superior noise cancellation, comfort, elegant design, intuitive controls, and exemplary phone performance make Bose headphones the best noise cancellation headphones for yard work.

With a noise reduction rating of 29 dB, these hearing protection devices protect your ears from the rumble of the lawnmower.

I had a set of $50 headphones that I had been using for over a year.

Since they were already worn out and already starting to get uncomfortable, I was looking for a replacement when I bumped into these.

Even after buying them, I couldn’t use them for over a month due to the heavy rains we were experiencing in Chicago. When the rains stopped, I couldn’t wait to get out and try out my new headphones.

How is the noise cancellation?

Frankly speaking, I never expected much when I put them on, but I was stunned.

The noise cancellation is excellent, and you can only hear the mild rumbling of the lawnmower with the headphones on.

I love listening to audiobooks when mowing. These headphones pair easily with my phone, and when I raise the volume a little bit, I can’t hear the lawnmower at all.

I love the huge volume knob. It’s effortless to locate and use. Kudos to the designers.

I haven’t listened to music with the headphones, but from listening to audiobooks, I can tell that the quality is superb.

If you love listening to the radio, the headphones have an FM digital radio that you can easily scan and set your desired stations.

Are the headphones comfortable?

I have a large yard, so I mow for at least 5 hours every time. I have used these headphones five times, and not once did I remove them due to discomfort.

The headphones have a soft PU leather headband that easily fits my head, ensuring that I’m as comfortable as possible when mowing.

How durable are they?

I can’t tell how long they will last (as I have had them for only three months), but from their construction, I can vouch they will give you a worthy service.

They are made from hard plastic that doesn’t break easily. I have dropped mine twice so far, and they are still intact.

The manufacturing company specifically designed these headphones for mowing, landscaping, construction work, and other extreme activities, so you should expect them to last for long.

What do I like about these noise cancelling headphones?

  • Very comfortable
  • Long battery life
  • Pair easily with the phone, tablet, and other gadgets
  • Excellent sound quality

What don’t I like?

  • I wish they had a Bluetooth turn off feature to conserve energy
  • I didn’t like the scanner
  • I wish there were a shuffle feature when using an SD card

Verdict

While the headphones miss a few features that would enhance your listening experience, they provide premium noise-canceling so you can mow your lawn in peace.

I bought these after my Bose QC 35 headphones broke. It was a Wednesday, and I needed to mow the lawn on a Saturday, so I urgently needed a replacement. When I went online, I was sure I didn’t want another high-end brand, headphone.

I wanted something that looked cool and premium and could provide me with the noise protection I was looking for. That’s when I found these:

How is the noise protection?

Since I was looking for headphones for mowing, the noise protection feature is crucial as, without it, I couldn’t protect my ears.

After ordering them, they arrived on Friday, and after charging them overnight, I couldn’t wait to put them through an active and extensive break-in session.

While they don’t provide the same noise cancellation as my Bose headphones, they are pretty effective at their price.

I could still hear the lawnmower engine, but when I put on the music, the engine noise was gone.

If you are like me and don’t like listening to music when mowing, these won’t be your ideal headphones, but if you don’t mind a little sound, you should definitely give them a go.

I was on the lawn for over four hours, and the original charge held on.

The headphones don’t have any wires, and the Bluetooth easily pairs with your device. I liked the sound quality, but I didn’t like the bass. I found it weaker than I would have liked.

Are the noise cancelling headphones comfortable?

What the headphones lack in noise cancelling, they compensate for comfort. In addition to the pieces being good looking, they are also extremely comfortable.

The headphones are lightweight while the headband and ear cushions have a pillowy-like softness that keeps you very comfortable.

To add icing to the cake, the ear cups rotate, giving you a fine-tuned fit.

Are the headphones durable?

From the strong, sturdy plastic used in their construction, you can have peace of mind that the headphones will last for a long time.

I used the headphones for over two years before I gave them to my cousin for music, and at the time of giving them out, they were as good as new.

I had dropped them a few times when mowing, and they had a few scratches, but they were still in good shape. If you take good care of these headphones, they will last for years.

What’s great about the headphones?

  • Good noise isolation
  • Extremely comfortable
  • Good to look at
  • Durable
  • Awesome Bluetooth reach

What I don't like about the headphones

  • The bass is weak for my liking
  • I didn’t like the packaging. They don’t come with a box. The manufacturers simply put them in a bag, which is rather unprofessional.
  • I found it challenging to control the volume

Verdict

The noise cancellation feature isn’t as effective as the one you find in premium headphones such as Bose, but the headphones provide some levels of noise protection. To drown the lawnmower noise, you need to crank up the volume.

Sony noise cancelling headphones

  • QUICK ATTENTION MODE: Cover the right ear cup to turn down your music for instant, easy conversation; Battery Charge Time: Approx. 4 hours

Although, they are a premium brand, I will tell you that if you like mowing in peace and looking for pieces that will cancel the engine noise without music, these aren’t your ideal pieces.

You should look elsewhere. For example, try out Bose QC 35.

How do the noise cancelling headphones work?

These units actively block the noise from the lawnmower. They have a smart atmospheric pressure optimizer that you can start using a button located on the left ear cup.

The button helps you to adjust the level of noise cancellation depending on the seal of the headphones around your ears and the current altitude.

For you to properly use the headphones, start with downloading the Sony app, then connect it to your device. You should then customize the settings and listen to the audio quality.

The smart listening feature on the headphones detects your activities and the environment and adjusts the ambient sound accordingly.

If considering buying these headphones, you should note that they don’t have physical volume controls.

Sony went with touch controls located on the right ear cup, which many people don’t like as they are challenging to use.

If you are like my friend Mike and you don’t like the controls, use the phone’s voice assist option instead.

How effective are the headphones at cancelling the noise?

As I mentioned above, these headphones don’t cancel all the noise coming from the lawnmower. You have to use music to drown it completely.

While this is the case, I like the fact that you can turn off the noise cancelling feature to save the battery.

The previous Sony 1000X model had a phone call problem where you couldn’t hear yourself, so you had to shout.

Sony has fixed this problem, and now these headphones allow you to listen to your voice easily using the voice focus mode, making phone calls easy and fun.

Are the headphones comfortable?

The comfort of the headphones is vital for your peace of mind. After all, no one wants to spend hours on the lawn in uncomfortable headphones, right?

While the headphones aren’t as comfortable as Bose QC35, they aren’t straining to the ears even when you use them for long hours.

These headphones weigh slightly over 9 ounces, which is light enough to ensure you easily carry them around when mowing.

Are they durable?

Sony has been around for a long time and has a reputation for manufacturing premium products that last for years.

I have been using these headphones for only three months, and so far, I haven’t had any issues. Many people complained that the 1000X cracked too fast. I hope these don’t.

From their appearance, the construction looks sturdy, and I’m rooting for them to last for years. I can’t say whether they are durable, but if Sony is to live up to its reputation, these headphones will give you a long service.

Pros

  • Sturdy design
  • Very comfortable
  • Great sound quality
  • Gorgeous look

Cons

  • They aren’t as comfortable as Bose QC35
  • In my opinion, they are too expensive
  • The app is easy to use but challenging to connect to the device

Verdict

While I feel the headphones are overpriced, they have their place. If you love listening to music when mowing, you can completely drown the lawnmower engine noise and have a great time mowing.

I no longer own these as I gave them out to my sister in law after she complained her lawn vacuum was too loud.

How did I get to know about them?

Before I bought these, I used to own a pair of headphones from a no-name brand. After getting frustrated for the headphones failing to block the noise effectively, I wanted a quick replacement of headphones that weren’t too expensive.

When doing my online research, I bumped into these. They were moderately priced and had many positive reviews, so I decided to give them a go.

How is the noise cancelling feature?

While the noise cancelling isn’t Bose quality, it’s powerful enough to muffle the lawnmower. The headphones use active noise cancelling to cancel out most of the noise, ensuring you are comfortable when mowing.

If you can still hear the rumbling of the lawn mowing machine, use music to drown it. The sound quality of the headphones is pretty decent.

Depending on the song you are listening to, the headphones can get extremely loud, so you have to turn it down.

Are the headphones comfortable?

The headphones weigh only 0.85 pounds, which is light enough to ensure you are comfortable wearing them all day long.

The protein ear cushions, pillowy-like softness, and earcups that rotate up to 90 degrees come together to give you some of the most comfortable headphones in the market.

While the pieces are comfortable, remember to remove them every 2-3 hours to relieve your ears.

Will they last for a long time?

As I mentioned above, I owned these pieces over one and a half years ago, and all this time, they worked as good as new. My sister in law has been using the headphones for close to a year now, and they are still in good shape.

To answer your question, whether the headphones will last for long, you bet they will.

While the headphones feel like just a few steps from cheap plastic, the construction is reliable, and you can count on them to give you a long service.

During my time with the headphones, I dropped them several times, and they only developed a few minor scratches. Nothing serious.

Wow

  • Long battery life
  • Solid construction
  • Awesome sound quality
  • Fast Bluetooth connection

Gripes

  • Poor Siri support
  • Annoying LED command lights

Verdict

Despite a few gripes, the headphones are pretty awesome, and for the price, there is no reason you shouldn’t try them out.

How do noise cancelling headphones work?

If you are like other people, you use noise cancelling headphones on planes so you might be wondering, " do noise cancelling headphones work for lawn mowing?"

Yes, the headphones work and there are plenty of headphones for lawn mowing you can buy and protect your ears when cutting grass.

The headphones use electronic processing to analyze ambient sound and attempt to generate “opposite” sound resulting in overall less noise.

Inside each pair of headphones, multiple processors produce inverse waves.

The microphone in the headphone takes the sounds from the outside and sends a signal to the headphones creating a specific frequency wave that cancels out the incoming sound.

The microphone then picks up the incoming sound pick and its decibels and sends the signal to the processor creating an inverse wave that cancels it out.

Types of Noise Cancelling Headphones for Mowing

There are three types of noise cancelling headphones with minor variations:

  • Headphones with passive noise cancellation technique
  • Headphones with adaptive noise cancellation technique
  • Headphones with active noise cancellation technique

Headphones with passive noise cancellation technique

They are the most common type of headphones in the market. They rely on noise isolation to block the noise and prevent it from getting into your ears.

The headphones are designed in such a way that their shape and materials used in construction block as much noise as possible from getting into the ears.

The extra padding on the headphones acts as a cushion and also helps the headphones to form a secure seal around the ears.

These headphones are most ideal when working in areas that require you to isolate irregular and high-frequency sounds.

While they are highly effective in their working, they are incredibly bulky. This means they will be uncomfortable if you have a large lawn, and you will spend hours outdoors.

Headphones with adaptive noise cancelling technique

This noise cancelling technique is new with headphones. The technology adjusts the strength of cancellation based on the level and type of surrounding noise.

Due to this, the noise cancellation is high when the background noise is loud and small when the sound is low.

When you buy headphones for mowing with this feature, you should activate this mode. Since the headphones clean out the sound more aggressively, you have better sound quality.

Headphones with active noise cancelling technique

Just like passive noise cancellation headphones, these headphones too rely on their shape and design to mute most of the external noise.

In addition to their shape, they also use advanced technology such as a small built-in audio process that detects and analyzes the sound pattern of the incoming noise and cancels out the noise by generating an anti-noise signal.

So, these headphones emit waves that are directly opposite of what they are capturing. The peaks and troughs of the generated waves meet and cancel each other resulting in a flatline.

When I used to travel a lot, I was recommended these pieces, and they are incredibly effective as they block most of the airplane engine roar. The headphones also help with sleep.

While they are highly effective in their working, one of the flaws I noticed is that you need a battery to activate the noise-canceling feature.

Adding a battery not only increases the weight of the headphones, but their price too.

How to get the most from noise cancelling headphones

noise canceling headphones for mowingNot all noise cancelling headphones are right for you. For you to get the most from the pieces you buy, you should consider several factors that include:

Style

Noise cancelling headphones come in different styles, such as circumaural, in-ear, around-ear, supra-aural, and over-ear headphones. Each of these styles has its pros and cons, and it’s up to you to choose the one that is ideal for your ears.

For example, while in-ear headphones are light and easy to carry around, they don’t block as much sound as their over-ear headphone counterparts.

Go for the best audio quality

If you love listening to music or radio when mowing, ensure that the radio headphones for mowing you buy give you premium sound quality.

Since most of the other lawnmower noise will be blocked, it will be underwhelming, filling your ears with audio that isn’t rich enough.

Headphones with premium audio quality also ensure you have excellent sound quality when answering your calls.

How do you ensure you buy headphones with the premium sound quality? By testing them before parting with your money.

If ordering online, test the headphones as soon as they arrive. If you don’t like them, return them until you get the pieces that give you the satisfaction you are looking for.

Consider the battery life

Most noise cancelling headphones need a battery to activate the noise cancelling feature. For you to avoid having to buy batteries now and then, take your time to research and find headphones with longer battery lives.

You will also get the most from headphones with built-in rechargeable units.

Most good quality headphones give you around 8 hours of battery life while the lesser-priced units give you less than 4 hours.

While you should always go for headphones with longer battery life, you should note that the battery life doesn’t always mean better quality headphones.

This is because some manufacturers put a lot of emphasis on battery life at the expense of the headphone quality.

When making the purchase, always test the headphones and ensure they have all the features you are looking for.

Take good care of the headphones

Buying quality headphones isn’t enough. You also need to take good care of them. When mowing, ensure the headphones fit properly, so they don’t fall, and you run them over with your lawnmower.

Once you are done with mowing, clean the headphones and store them in an area away from dust, oils, and other harmful elements.

You also should repair the headphones when they develop problems. If you have had headphones for a long time, you will agree with me that the first thing to wear out is the cushions.

To keep the headphones in good shape and ensure they provide you with the ear protection you are looking for, repair the cushions as soon as they get damaged.
