types of hard hats

There are many types of these hats in the market that you can go for. Some of the most common ones are:

Class A hard hats: These are designed to protect you from falling objects. The units also protect you from electrical shocks of up to 2, 200 volts.

You should wear these when working in areas where you are in contact with electricity.

Class B hard hats: Just like class A hard hats, these too protect you from falling objects and electrical shocks.

The cool thing with these is that they provide you with electrical shock protection of up to 20, 000 volts.

Class C hard hats: They are usually made of aluminum which as you know is a good conductor of electricity.

Due to this, they don’t provide you with protection against electrical hazards. They also don’t protect you from corrosive substances that you might come across when working.

While this is the case, the cool thing about them is that they protect you from falling objects.

Bump caps: They are made from lightweight plastic and are designed to protect you from bumping your head on protruding objects.

When buying the units, you should note that they don’t make use of a suspension system. They also don’t protect you from falling objects or protect you from electrical hazards.

How to wear a hard hat

For you to protect your delicate head, you should always wear the hard hat when you are working in an area where you are at more risk of getting hurt.

Before you wear the hat, you should inspect the shell of the hat for cracks, dents, gouges and other defects it might be having.

You also should inspect the suspension system for frayed or broken straps. If there are defects on the unit, you should have the unit repaired by an expert.

If the damage is extensive, you should replace the unit.

If everything is okay, you should go ahead and wear a hat.

You need to adjust the suspension inside the hard hat so that it comfortably and securely sits on your head.

You shouldn’t alter the suspension or shell of the hat. Of major importance, you shouldn’t drill holes in the outer shell.

Unless the manufacturer has indicated so, you shouldn’t wear the hat backward as it won’t give you the protection that you are looking for.

If the hat is too big, you should replace it with a smaller one.

Some people make the mistake of putting things such as socks, caps, and other materials under the hat, but this shouldn’t be you.

When you put things under the hat you not only put your head in danger, you also risk the hat not giving you the protection that you need.

In addition to the hats protecting your head, they also serve the reflective role where they reflect light making you more visible especially when working in dark environments.

For the hat to retain the reflective feature you need to avoid painting, scratching, or drilling holes in it.

How to take good care of the hard hat

For the hat to give you the service you need for a long time, you need to take good care of it. The cool thing is that there are many ways in which you can do it.

One of the things that you should do is to regularly clean the hat. For ideal results, you should clean it once a month.

When cleaning it, aim at removing oil, grease, sweat, and any chemicals that might be present. You should clean the hat by soaking it in mild soap solution and hot water for at least 5-10 minutes.

Once you are done, clear the water, wipe the hat and let it air dry.

Another thing you should do to ensure that your hat lasts for a long time is to avoid dropping it.

You should note that the shell tends to break when hit by hard objects or falls from a distance of 8 or more feet.

In the event, the hat falls and the shell gets damaged, you should replace it immediately.
