5 Of The Best High Lift Mower Blades

Best High Lift Mowers

Also known as basic blades, regular blades, or 2-in-1 blades, high-lift mower blades are the go-to blades for mowers with a bagger.

The blades are designed to cut the grass and lift the clippings, propelling them up and out of the discharge chute.

Are you looking for the best high lift mower blades? You need to consider a number of factors for you to buy the right ones:

What you will learn

Which factors should you consider when buying high-lift mower blades?

We have different types of lawn mowers that come in different sizes. This means that the different lawn mowers fit different sizes of blades.

When making the purchase, take the measurements of the lawnmower blade so that you can buy the right size.

Ensure that you are careful when taking the measurements so that you don’t buy blades that are too big or too small for your lawnmower.

Pay attention to the length of the blade. Most of the blades are between 18 and 22 inches but there are a few that are out of this bracket.

Avoid buying a blade that is too long as it won’t fit into the lawn mower. Also, avoid one that is too short as it won’t get the work done.

Just as the blades come in different sizes, they also come in different shapes. There are the single and three blades.

While some mowers can use any available shape, there are some that can only use a specific shape.

For you to avoid buying the wrong blade take your time and note its shape.

Blade holes

Blade holes are unique to each manufacturer and guess what? Buying a blade with the wrong blade holes you will be setting yourself up for trouble.

Before you head to the stores, take your time and confirm the number of holes in your blade.

You should note that some manufacturers will have blades with the same number of holes but with differing diameters.

To confirm that you are buying the exact blade, measure the diameter of the hole.

Manufacturer number

All manufacturers inscribe their numbers on the lawn mower blades.

These numbers come in handy when you are buying new blades as you have a very easy time doing it.

All you need to do is take a look at the manufacturer number and head to your local store to make the purchase.

The weight of the blade

This is a minor detail but it might be of value to you if you worry about the weight of your lawnmower.

A light high lift mower blade will be easier to install but it might be weak thus break easily.

A heavier one might be tough thus last for a long time, but it might be too heavy for your lawnmower. You should go for one that is ideal for you.

The width of the blade

It’s challenging to find the right width of the mower blade. To avoid a lot of confusion, buy a blade that is the exact size of the previous one.

If you are like me, the price is a factor that is close to your heart. While this is true, it doesn’t mean that it’s the only thing you should base your decision on.

Just like when buying any other thing, the cheaper the price, the lower the quality thus the worst experience you will get.

At the same time, a high-end premium mower blade doesn’t mean that it will give you the best results.

For you to be on the safe side, buy a blade that is within your price range but not too cheap that it comes apart after only a few uses.

High Lift Replacement Blade For Craftsman, Poulan, Husqvarna

These are a set of three high-quality blades made from high-quality carbon steel. The blades are 18” long 2” wide, and .204” thick.

To make it easy for you to mount the blades on the lawn mower, the blades feature a 5-point star mounting hole.

According to the manufacturers, the size of the blades makes them throw the grass gripping better and bag better than the ordinary blades.

When it comes to the different lawn mowers that you can replace the blades, you can use the blades to replace craftsman Poulan Husqvarna 187254, 187256, 532187254, 532187256.

Are they durable?

Well, the blades are made from high-quality steel thus you should expect them to last for a long time.

While I haven’t used them for a long time, I can vouch for them as they are the heaviest mower blades I have ever installed on my lawnmower.

Are they easy to install?

One of the things many people consider when buying blades is their ease of installation. As mentioned above, the blades have a 5-point star mounting hole that makes your work very easy.

When I was installing these, it didn’t take me more than 15 minutes which is quite impressive.

I replace my lawn mower blades once a year as I have a large lawn and mow a lot. I have been using them for a few months and they have a number of things I like.

One of the things I like about them is that they throw the cut grass in a stream clear of the deck grass.

The old blades I was using used to cause congestion at the deck exit. Due to this, I had to undertake periodic manual clearing which was boring and annoying.

I have also noticed that these blades are cutting more uniformly than the old blades which leaves my lawn looking great.

Unlike other homeowners, I sharpen my blades whenever I notice them not cutting the grass as effectively than they should.

Since I sharpened these, they haven’t lost the sharpness.

I have feeling I don’t have to re-sharpen them anytime soon. The blades are also so well balanced thus my lawn mower doesn’t shake when I’m mowing.

Another thing I like about the blades is that they are very well built. As I mentioned above, they are the heaviest duty blades I have installed on my lawnmower.

Due to the large size of my lawn, I replace blades once a year. Since they are of high quality, I have a feeling they will last a little bit longer.

While the blades are great and have a number of great features, they have a number of things that I don’t like.

One of the things I noticed is that they aren’t ideal for bagging. While the company advertises them as the best ones for bagging, they aren’t.

I have mowed a number times and I tend to go back and collect the grass as the blades don’t bag all of the grass gripping.

Another thing I noticed about the blades is that they differ in size. This calls for you to take caution when buying them as you can easily order the wrong size.

The best way of avoiding buying the wrong ones is to carry the old blade with you to the store.

I ordered by blades online and the ones I received were a size larger. I had to return them an order a smaller size.

I went for these blades when I was dissatisfied with the craftsman blades.

The previous blades didn’t give my lawn the smooth look I was looking for.

How is the quality of the blades?

Visually, the blades look of a better quality, although they are a little bit slimmer than any other blades I have used before.

You should note that while they are slim, it doesn’t mean they won’t give your lawn a clean cut.

I have been using these blades for a few months now and they haven’t disappointed. The only time I had a bad experience was when I hit a rock when mowing.

Due to the thin nature of the blade, the blade bent a lot. I’m not talking about a minor bend, the blades literally bent 90 degrees. Which is a lot if you ask me.

Are they easy to install?

This is one of the most attractive features about these blades. All you need is to tighten two screws and you are good to go.

The ease of installation of these blades makes them an ideal choice for you, if you are like me and don’t like spending a lot of time under the lawn mower fixing the blades.

In less than 10 minutes you will be done with the installation and you will be on your way to giving your lawn the look it deserves.

The blades come with a number of great features that makes them an ideal choice for you when you are looking for the best high lift mower blades. These advantages include:

High quality thus last for a long time

Heavy duty thus you can use them to mow a large lawn

Versatile. You can use them when you are looking to bag the grass gripping. You can also use them when you are looking to undertake mulching.

They are extremely easy to install. As mentioned, you only need to tighten two screws and you are good to go.

The main flaw is that the blades are too thin; therefore, they bend easily when you hit a rock or any other hard object.

The cool thing is that when you are looking for blades to undertake regular lawn mowing, you have nothing to worry as they will give you the results you are looking for.

Another flaw of the blades is that you can’t use them on certain types of lawn mowers. For example, you can’t use them on John Deere lawn mowers.

I came across these pieces when I was looking for lawn mower blades that I would also use to mow weeds growing on a dirty patch of my yard.

Will the blades last?

I can’t talk much about their durability. For the past five years I have been mowing, on average, the blades wear out after a year.

I have been mowing using these blades for the past three months and I haven’t had any issues with them.

On first look, the blades are tough and made from high-quality materials. From the look of things, they will most likely last for more than a year.

When I unpacked them, I thought I had to sharpen them as I had done with other blades I had bought before.

While they might not look as sharp, they are sharp and you should be cautious when opening them.

Will I have an easy time installing them?

As mentioned before, the ease of installation of the blades is of great importance. These are very easy to install.

In fact, I asked my son to install them and he did it in less than 15 minutes.

The only mistake he made was to install them upside down which as you can guess didn’t cut the grass as well as I wanted.

To avoid making the mistake, you should be cautious when installing them. Always confirm which way is up.

The blade has a number of great features that you should keep your eyes on:

Versatility: The cool thing with the blades is that you can use them for mulching and also if you want to collect the grass in a bag, you can use them too.

Unlike other blades that work only on specific brands of lawn mowers, these work on a variety of brands; therefore, you can use them regardless of the type of mower you are using.

You only need to ensure the blade is of the right size.

From the first look, they look tough and they can’t easily bend or break when you are mowing areas with rocks or thick dirt.

They are already sharpened; therefore, you don’t need to do it. Once you receive them you only need to install them and you are good to go.

While they are advertised to be made from USA, they are actually made in Mexico.

I don’t care where they are made, but the sellers should be honest when making the allegation

Unlike other blades I have used before, these blades aren’t straight enough.

While this doesn’t affect the proper working of the blades, it doesn’t make them the best to use.

While my blades arrived sharp and didn’t require any sharpening. My friend, Mike received his while blunt thus he had to sharpen them.

This means that while the company says that all the blades come sharpened, it always isn’t the case.

When you buy, before you install them on your lawn mower, confirm that they are sharp enough. If they aren’t, sharpen them.

Products made in USA are usually of high quality as they are manufactured under strict conditions.

These blades were recommended to me by Vince. This is after I had tried almost all the options in the market without success.

I was looking for blades that would pick up the grass that I had ran over with the tractor.

I tried using sharp, dull, high, and even low setting blades, and none seemed to work.

When Vince recommended the blades and researched and found that they could fit the six-point hole configuration of my mower.

The blades have a high suction which is enough to lift most of the grass leaving my lawn clean and attractive.

I’m now a very happy lawn owner and would recommend anyone to go for these pieces.

Will the blades last?

Well. Since they are made in USA, you should expect them to last for a long time.

They are made from high-quality steel and three inches in width; therefore, when you don’t mow areas with a lot of rocks, they should last for a long time.

Are the blades easy to install?

Unlike other blades I have used in the past, these ones don’t come with clear markings on which side is up and which is down.

If you have used lawnmower blades before it shouldn’t be too hard on your part, should it?

When installing them, you should keep the recessed side top, not bottom.

The blades come with a number of advantages that make them an ideal choice as your replacement blades. These advantages include:

You can use them to replace a wide range of lawnmower blades. Since they aren’t specific to a given brand, you can use them on a wide range of lawn mowers.

They are easy to install. In less than 15 minutes you will be done.

If you don’t want to collect the grass, you can use them for mulching thus enrich your lawn.

One of the main flaws I noticed with the blades is that they tend to lose their sharpness too fast; therefore, you have to keep on sharpening them every now and then.

This can be annoying especially when you have a large lawn.

During the installation, you have to lock the blades at the center for them to be properly in place.

If you have never used the feature before, it can be a challenge to get it right.

I didn’t buy these blades. They were given to me by my wife after she noticed how I struggled to mow our Bermuda grass. If your lawn has Bermuda grass, you know it’s hard to mow.

You can imagine what I had to go through when the blades were dull and old.

I always thought of replacing them, but due to one reason or another, I never came to it.

One morning when preparing the lawn mower for mowing, my wife came out with the pieces and handed them to me.

On first look I thought, well, those are too feminine (they are bright orange in color) and can’t cut the tough grass. Boy, could I be wrong!

Are the blades tough?

I have to say that the color of the blades doesn’t do them any justice. If you are like me, you are used to black or plain blades.

This makes the orange colored blades look like toys.

While the blades have a feminine color, they are made from high-quality steel thus you can have peace of mind that they will last for a long time.

I used the blades for almost a year and during the period I didn’t have any problem with them despite the abuse I put them through.

I used to go through sand, dirt, piles of oak leaves, and even rocks and not once did I have a problem.

While the blades have a tough construction, I have noticed some homeowners citing that their blades don’t last as long especially when they are using the heavy duty lawn mowing machines.

The main reason for this is because they don’t clear their lawn fields prior to mowing. This is wrong.

You should note that the blades are bound to bend if you use them in areas with a lot of huge rocks.

For you to be on the safe side, always ensure that you get rid of rocks and any other materials that can damage the blades.

Are they easy to install?

You can bet they are. All you need to do is to tighten a few screws and you will be good to go.

When installing them, be keen on which side is up and which is down as installing them the wrong way, you won’t mow the lawn properly.

Made from tough high-quality steel

Easy to install

They fit the lawnmower perfectly

You can only use them on Husqvarna lawn mowers

Some homeowners have cited that they are longer than advertised; therefore, you should be keen when buying.

Double check the size so that you order the right size.

Not ideal for mowing large lawns with rocks and other hard materials

What are high lift mower blades?

High lift mower blades are a type of blades that measure between 1 inch and 1-3/16 inches.

The blades are characterized by a more pronounced angle on the corner that creates a more lift.

Due to their design, these blades are ideal for lifting grass thus creating a fresh-cut look.

When you are using these blades you have to note that you have to use more horsepower, especially when cutting tall or dense grass.

Avoid using the blades in sandy or dusty soil.

The sand and dust will get sucked into the deck thus accelerating the wearing out of the blades and also the lawn mower.

Why should you buy high lift mower blades?

There are plenty of reasons why you should go for these blades and not the other ones in the market. Some of the benefits that come with buying the blades include:

They discharge clipping properly

Since the blades are longer and have a thicker metal, they throw out the grass clippings at a greater force.

Since the grass cuttings are thrown far away from the machine, it becomes easy for you to rake.

They are clump-proof

Since they throw the grass clippings and twigs far away, the grasses don’t cluster forming clumps that would catch in the mower deck.

As a result, the grass clumps don’t get in the way of the blades thus causing the lawn mower to strain when working.

This means that your lawn mower functions optimally and with little power.

They make bagging easy

As a homeowner, you know that the hard part of mowing isn’t to mow—it’s to rake and clear the grass clippings.

The best high lift mower blades make it easy for you to bag and clear the clippings.

The blades produce a high suction pressure that throws the clipping and twigs into the discharge bag.

This means that once you are done with mowing you don’t have to go back and collect the pieces as they will already be in the bag.

How should you install the high lift mower blades?

For you to get the benefits that come with having high lift mower blades you need to install them properly.

You need three things to install the blades: protective gloves, block of wood, and spanner or torque wrench.

Park the lawn mower safely

The last thing you want is the lawn mower falling on you when you are fixing the blades.

To prevent this from happening ensure that the lawn mower is parked safely.

Place the machine in an area where it can’t fall over. Remember to disconnect the spark plug and empty the gas tank.

Also, secure the oil stick.

Remove the old blades

Once the lawn mower is in place, put a block of wood in the way of the blades and hold them in place so that they don’t spin.

Using a torque wrench or spanner, turn the blade bolt anticlockwise until it loosens.

Repeat the same procedure on the other blades and remove the old blades and install new ones.

The best way of installing the new blades is to place them in a horizontal position with all the mounting hardware.

Once in place, secure the blade with a blade bolt and tighten it as much as you can.

You should be keen when tightening the blades as they can hurt you.

The safe way of doing it is placing a block of wood in the way of the blade to prevent it from spinning around while you are tightening the bolt.

Tighten the bolt securely to prevent it from flying out when you are working.

You should note that failure to tighten the blade properly puts it at the risk of flying out and causing serious injury to you and other people that might be around.

To ensure that this doesn’t happen, apply a lot of pressure on the wrench thus ensuring that the bolt is as tight as possible.

Rotate the blades

After tightening the blades, rotate them ¼ turn until they stand vertically.

You also should hold and turn the blades 360 degrees to determine whether they touch each other.

The blades shouldn’t touch. If they do, you have done it the wrong way and you should remove and reinstall them.

Undertake a test run

If the blades are properly in place and tight, lift the lawn mower to a standing position and put it on a test run to ensure that everything is running properly.

Is the lawn mower cutting the grass as it should? Enjoy the new blade.

FAQs about high-lift mower blades

If this is the first time you are buying high lift mower blades you might be confused about making the purchase.

Here are some of the most common questions that many first time buyers have:

How can one recognize high-lift mower blades?

It’s easy to tell whether you are buying a high lift mower blade by looking at the angle.

The best high-lift mower blades have a more extreme upward angle at the back part of the blade.

The curved look of the blade makes it possible for the blade to propel the grass clippings through the chute into the bag.

Are there negatives of using high-lift mower blades?

Yes, there are. One of their major drawbacks is that they tend to produce a lot of dust when working compared to other types of blades in the market.

The increased dust is due to increased airflow to the blades.

Due to the dust, you have to regularly sharpen the blades as the dust tends to dull them.

Are there other types of mower blades in the market other than high lift mower blades?

There are many other types of blades that you can go for. They include:

Low lift: They are usually under ¾ inches. They are ideal for sandy or dusty areas where you don’t need to do a lot of suction.

The main advantage of using the blades is that they produce less noise, less dust, and greatly increase the life of the lawn mower.

Medium lift: They are usually between ¾ inch to 15/16 inches.

The blade is usually straight edged. You can recognize the blade by the presence of a slight upward angle on the edges.

Extra high lift: These produce the most suction. Due to this, they are the best when you are looking to cut tall and compact grass.

Due to the high suction, you should avoid using them in sandy or dusty soils.

This is because a lot of sand and dust is sucked into the deck accelerating the wearing out of the blades and lawn mower.

Mulching blade: Also known as a 3-in-1 blade, this blade is very popular with people that mow their lawns without a bagger.

The mulching blade is designed to kick up the grass clippings after being cut so that it can be re-cut into smaller pieces.

While the blade is great to use when you are environmentally conscious, it’s not the right one to go for when you are looking to mow long grass (more than 4 inches).

This is because the blade won’t be able to re-circulate and cut the grass into smaller clippings when the grass is too long.

When using the mulching blade, ensure that the blade is sharp all the time.

This is because a dull blade will have a hard time re-cutting the grass clippings resulting to grass clumps being left on the lawn.

When do you know it’s time to replace the mower blades?

As a good homeowner, you should regularly inspect your lawn mower and its parts for any dents, bents, and any other nicked parts.

A damaged mower blade can’t function optimally; therefore, when you notice flaws in it, replace it as soon as possible.

When should I sharpen the lawn mower blade?

You should do so when you notice the lawn mower leaving grass behind after you have already mowed.

Presence of grass means that grass cutter isn’t working properly.

For you to sharpen the blades you should remove them from the lawn mower and using a grinding stone or file, sharpen the two sides.

If you aren’t a handyman, consider hiring a professional to help you with the sharpening.

You should note that there is no point of sharpening the blade if there are dents, bents, or badly nicked parts on the blade.

In such a scenario, you are better off replacing the blade.

These are some of the best high lift mower blades that you can go for as a homeowner.

When buying the pieces, always ensure that you buy them from a reputable store.

After making the purchase, you should note that you need to take good care of them.

You need to watch where you mow. As rule of thumb, avoid mowing areas with plenty of rocks. If you have, you should first take time to remove all rocks in the area.

You also should sharpen the blades regularly.

Sharp blades not only make your work easy and give you a beautiful lawn, they also make the work of the lawn mower easy thus the mower doesn’t use a lot of fuel.

You should note that even with the best care, it’s common for the mower blades to wear out.

When this happens, simply replace them with better, more efficient pieces.
